A kite is a tethered heavier-than-air craft with wing surfaces that react against the air to create lift and drag. A kite consists of wings, tethers and anchors. Kites often have a bridle and tail to guide the face of the kite so the wind can lift it. A kite may have fixed or moving anchors that can balance the kite.

When we talk about the skies above China, we are often referring to topics like pollution or busy airlines. But beneath the clouds there is a Chinese art form that has glided through history. This ancient relic brings the colors and patterns of the ancient dynasties to the city skies of modern China and the world. It's the famous Chinese kite and its long history of cultural significance begins thousands of years ago.

29th Annual Asian Kite Festival
April is National Kite Month and our annual Chinese Kite Festival with Kite Flying will celebrate the wide world of kites over four days this year: April 13, 14, 15 and On Thursday, April 13 from 4 to 7 pm, the public is invited to take part in a community kite making project at Lahaina Cannery Mall. This kite will be completed over the course of two days, and sent up into the air on Saturday during kite flying festivities.
A s kites were invented before the written word many suggestions have been made as to how they originated. The Chinese had the basic building materials to make kites - silk and bamboo and were the first people to write about kites. Another theory is that to make a high officials banner more visible, it was strengthened with a bamboo frame and flown, or it may have been inspired by seeing the sails of fishing boats being blown in the wind.
